What to Wear for Garba and Dandiya Nights

QUICK ANSWER

For garba and dandiya, wear a light, flared outfit that stops just above the ankle. A chaniya choli, a crop top with a flared skirt, or a sharara in georgette or Chanderi works best. Add mirror work for shine, pin your dupatta, and wear flat, padded shoes. You'll be dancing for hours, so comfort comes first.

The first time I went to a proper garba night, I made every mistake in the book. My lehenga was heavy. It touched the floor. My dupatta kept slipping. By the third round, I was holding my skirt with one hand and my dupatta with the other, and trying to clap with neither.

That was a long time ago. Since then, I've written about Navratri for close to twenty years and danced at more garba nights than I can count. I've learnt that the best garba outfit isn't the most expensive one. It's the one you forget you're wearing.

This guide covers everything I wish someone had told me. What garba and dandiya are, what to wear to each, and the small styling tricks that keep you dancing till the last beat.

When are garba and dandiya nights in 2026?

Navratri 2026 runs from Sunday, 11 October to Monday, 19 October. Garba and dandiya nights happen through all nine nights. The busiest events usually fall on the weekends. This year, that's Saturday, 17 October and Sunday, 18 October.

Most big events in Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad start around 8 PM and go on till midnight or later. Plan for four hours on your feet.

What is the difference between garba and dandiya?

People often use the two words as if they mean the same thing. They don't.

Best outfit

Full flare for spins

Freedom at the arms and waist

Garba comes from the Sanskrit word garbha, which means womb. Dancers circle a lamp placed inside a clay pot with holes in it. The lamp stands for life, and the circle for the cycle of life. In December 2023, UNESCO added garba to its list of the world's intangible cultural heritage. That's how special this dance is.

Dandiya raas is danced with a pair of sticks. You tap your sticks against your partner's in rhythm. It's quick and playful. Many events today mix both. You'll dance garba first, then pick up the sticks later in the night.

What do women traditionally wear for garba?

The classic garba outfit is the chaniya choli. It has three parts:

·         Chaniya: a wide, flared skirt, often with many panels.

·         Choli: a fitted blouse, often backless or tied with strings.

·         Odhni: a light dupatta, usually tied or pinned.

The traditional crafts of Gujarat make these outfits shine. Mirror work, called abhla, catches the light as you spin. Bandhani is tie-dye with tiny dots. Leheriya has wave-like stripes. Bright colours are the rule. Red, orange, pink, green, yellow and blue all look wonderful in a circle of dancers.

Men traditionally wear a kediyu, a short frilled top gathered at the chest, with a dhoti or churidar and a bright turban or safa.

What is the best garba outfit for women today?

You don't have to wear a traditional chaniya choli. Many women now choose modern pieces that give the same swing with a fresh look. Here are the styles that work best for a night of dancing.

1. The flared crop top and skirt

This is the modern chaniya choli. It's light, it spins beautifully, and it looks great in photos.

How long should a garba lehenga be?

This is the question I get asked most, and the answer is simple. Your skirt should end just above the ankle. About one to two inches above the floor with your shoes on is perfect.

A floor-length skirt looks lovely standing still. But in garba, you'll step on it, trip on it, and drag it through the dust. A shorter hem keeps you safe and lets people see your footwork.

If you already own a longer lehenga, a tailor can raise the hem or add a hidden tuck. It's a small change that makes a big difference.

Which fabrics are best for garba and dandiya?

Garba nights are long, crowded and warm, even in October. The right fabric keeps you cool and free.

·         Georgette: light, flowy and hard to crease. My top pick for dancing.

·         Chanderi: airy and soft, with a gentle sheen.

·         Cotton and cotton silk: very breathable, great for outdoor events.

·         Crepe: light and fluid, good for fusion sets.

·         Raw silk: holds its shape, better for dandiya than for long garba rounds.

Avoid heavy velvet, thick brocade and stiff can-can layers. They look grand but get very hot after the first hour.

How much flare do you need for garba?

More than you think. The spin is the heart of garba. A skirt with many panels or kalis opens out like a flower when you turn. That's the moment everyone wants on camera.

But flare and weight aren't the same thing. A good garba skirt has lots of fabric in the panels and very little weight in the embroidery. Look for work spread across the skirt, not packed into one heavy border.

What shoes should you wear for garba?

Please don't wear heels. I say this with love. You'll regret it by 9 PM.

·         Padded juttis are my favourite. They're flat, pretty and soft.

·         Kolhapuris work well on outdoor grounds.

·         Mojaris with a cushioned sole are good for indoor floors.

·         Many dancers go barefoot at traditional garba around the lamp. Check with the organisers first.

Break in new shoes at home before the event. A blister on day one can ruin all nine nights.

How do you stop your dupatta from falling during garba?

A loose dupatta is the enemy of a good garba night. Try one of these:

·         Pin it at the shoulder and the waist. Use two or three safety pins on the inside.

·         Tie it across the body. Drape it from one shoulder and knot it at the opposite hip.

·         Tuck it at the waist. Drape it like a half saree and tuck the end into your skirt.

·         Skip it. A cape set or a heavily worked choli doesn't need a dupatta at all.

What jewellery and makeup work for garba nights?

Jewellery: Oxidised silver is the classic garba choice. Jhumkas, a choker, a nose pin, and lots of bangles look wonderful with mirror work. Keep it light. Heavy earrings pull on your ears after a few hours of dancing.

Hair: A braid or a low bun stays put. Add flowers, a paranda or a few hair pins with small mirrors. Open hair looks pretty for about ten minutes before it sticks to your neck.

Makeup: Use a primer and a setting spray. Pick a long-wear lipstick and waterproof kajal. Bring blotting papers in your potli. You'll sweat, so plan for it.

What should you carry to a garba night?

A small crossbody or a potli that ties at the wrist is best. Inside, carry:

·         Your phone and a little cash

·         Blotting papers and a lipstick

·         Two spare safety pins

·         A small hand fan if it's outdoors

·         A band-aid or two for your feet

How do you dress for a garba night in Canada or the US?

Garba is now a global event. In Brampton, Toronto, New Jersey and London, Navratri nights draw thousands of people. Many college teams even compete in garba and raas.

If you're dancing abroad, remember the weather. October nights in Canada can be cold. Choose an outfit with a jacket or cape, or layer a light shawl for the walk to the venue. Keep the jacket off once you're dancing.

If you shop from India, order at least three to four weeks early to leave time for shipping and fittings. Our team does video consultations on WhatsApp for customers abroad.

Can you wear your garba outfit again?

Yes, and you should. A good garba outfit is one of the most useful pieces in your festive wardrobe. Here's where else it works:

·         Mehendi: Bright colours and mirror work are perfect for a mehendi.

·         Haldi: A yellow or green crop top set is made for a haldi.

·         Sangeet: Swap oxidised silver for gold and add a dupatta.

·         Diwali card parties: Pair the skirt with a sequinned blouse or a jacket.

The wedding season starts soon after Diwali. Your garba look can easily go to two or three functions before the year ends.

Frequently asked questions about garba and dandiya outfits

What should I wear for garba night?

Wear a light, flared outfit in a bright colour. A chaniya choli, a crop top with a flared skirt, a sharara or a short anarkali all work well. Choose georgette, Chanderi or cotton, keep the hem just above the ankle, and wear flat, padded shoes.

What is the traditional garba dress called?

The traditional garba dress for women is the chaniya choli. It has a flared skirt called a chaniya, a fitted blouse called a choli, and a light dupatta called an odhni. Men wear a kediyu with a dhoti or churidar.

Is dandiya the same as garba?

No. Garba is danced in a circle with claps and turns, usually around a lamp. Dandiya raas is danced in pairs with two decorated sticks. Many Navratri events include both.

Can I wear a saree to garba?

You can, but it's not the easiest choice for dancing. If you love sarees, pick a pre-draped saree or a light georgette saree. Pin the pleats and pallu well, and keep the hem above the ankle.

What colour should I wear for garba in 2026?

Many people follow the Navratri colour of the day. In 2026, the weekend garba nights fall on Saturday, 17 October (grey) and Sunday, 18 October (purple). If you don't follow the colours, bright shades with mirror work always look right.

What shoes are best for dandiya?

Flat, padded juttis or mojaris are best. Kolhapuris work well outdoors. Avoid heels, as you'll be on your feet for hours. Some traditional garba circles are danced barefoot, so check with the organisers.
