Bhai Dooj 2026: Tilak Time, Thali, Rituals and Gift Ideas

QUICK ANSWER

Bhai Dooj 2026 is on Wednesday, 11 November in India. In Delhi, the tilak time is from about 1:09 PM to 3:19 PM. In Canada and the US, Bhai Dooj falls a day earlier, on Tuesday, 10 November. Sisters apply tilak, do an aarti and feed sweets, and brothers give a gift.

Every year, my brother calls me on the morning of Bhai Dooj with the same question. "What time is the tilak?" And every year I tell him. And every year he's late anyway, carrying a box of kaju katli and a slightly guilty smile.

I'm sure many sisters know that feeling. Bhai Dooj is the gentlest day of the Diwali week. The fireworks are done, the big puja is over, and what's left is a quiet thali, a tilak, and an hour or two with your brother.

This year, there's real confusion about the date, so let's clear that first. Then I'll walk you through the thali, the ritual, how families do it abroad, and, for every brother reading this, some gift ideas your sister will actually love.

When is Bhai Dooj in 2026?

Bhai Dooj 2026 falls on Wednesday, 11 November in India.

In Canada and the US, it falls a day earlier, on Tuesday, 10 November. That's because Bhai Dooj is kept when Dwitiya tithi is running in the afternoon, and the timing shifts with the time zone.

Why is there confusion between 10 and 11 November? Dwitiya tithi starts at about 2:00 PM on 10 November in India and ends at about 3:53 PM on 11 November. The tilak is traditionally done in the aparahna, or afternoon, and in India the full afternoon window with Dwitiya falls on the 11th. That's why some calendars, especially those set for North America, show the 10th.

Also note the full Diwali sequence in India this year: Diwali on Sunday, 8 November, Govardhan Puja on Tuesday, 10 November, and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday, 11 November.

What is the story of Bhai Dooj?

The best known story is about Yamraj and his sister Yamuna. Yamuna had asked her brother many times to visit her. One day, the second day after the Kartik new moon, he finally came. She welcomed him with an aarti, put a tilak on his forehead and cooked him a feast. He was so moved that he blessed every brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this day with a long life. That's why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya.

Another story tells of Lord Krishna, who visited his sister Subhadra after defeating the demon Narakasura. She welcomed him with sweets, flowers and a tilak.

How do you set up a Bhai Dooj thali?

Here's what goes on a traditional Bhai Dooj thali in most North Indian homes.

·         Roli or kumkum for the tilak

·         Akshat, unbroken rice, to press onto the tilak

·         A small diya for the aarti

·         Sweets, usually your brother's favourite

·         A dry coconut (gola) in many Punjabi and Delhi homes

·         Mishri or batasha

·         Kalava, the red and yellow sacred thread

·         A few flowers

·         A small bowl of water

Lay a clean cloth on the thali first. Arrange the roli and rice in small bowls, so they don't spill when you lift the thali for the aarti.

How is the Bhai Dooj ritual done?

1.       The brother sits facing north or east, often on a low stool or a clean mat.

2.      The sister applies the tilak of roli on his forehead and presses a few grains of rice onto it.

3.      She ties the kalava on his wrist in some families.

4.      She does an aarti with the diya and prays for his long life and happiness.

5.      She feeds him sweets and offers the coconut.

6.      He gives her a gift and promises to always stand by her.

7.      The family shares a meal, usually a festive lunch.

In many homes, the sister keeps a light fast until the tilak is done. Traditionally, the brother visits the sister's home, so married sisters often host.

How is Bhai Dooj celebrated in different regions?

Region

Name

What's special

Delhi, Punjab, UP

Bhai Dooj or Bhaiya Dooj

Roli tilak, coconut, a big lunch

West Bengal

Bhai Phonta

A sandalwood and kajal mark, with a rhyme about keeping Yama away

Maharashtra and Goa

Bhau Beej

The brother sits in a rangoli square; basundi-poori is served

Nepal

Bhai Tika

A seven-coloured tika and a garland of makhamali flowers

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Bhatru Dwitiya

Tilak and a family meal

In Nepal, Bhai Tika is the last day of Tihar. Sisters draw a protective line of oil and water around their brothers and give them a garland of globe amaranth, a flower that stays fresh for a long time, as a wish for a long life.

How do you celebrate Bhai Dooj when your brother lives far away?

So many of us now live in different cities or countries. Here's how families keep the ritual alive.

·         Send a tilak kit ahead. Pack roli, rice, kalava and a small box of sweets, and courier it a week before.

·         Do the tilak on a video call. Your brother can apply the tilak himself while you do the aarti on your side.

·         Mind the date. If your brother is in Canada or the US, his Bhai Dooj is on 10 November, while yours in India is on 11 November. Many families simply pick one time that works for both.

·         Celebrate on the weekend too. Bhai Dooj is a working day abroad, so many families meet on the nearest weekend.

What should a brother gift his sister on Bhai Dooj?

This is the question I'm asked most by brothers, usually two days before the festival. Here's my honest answer. Cash is fine, but a thoughtful gift is remembered for years.

Budget

Gift ideas

Up to Rs. 5,000

Silver earrings, a skincare set, a book she's been meaning to read

Rs. 5,000 to 25,000

A silver bracelet, a handbag, a good perfume, a light suit

Rs. 25,000 to 50,000

A designer suit or anarkali, a gold pendant

Above Rs. 50,000

A silk ensemble she'll wear to weddings, or gold jewellery

If you're buying clothes, ask her mother or a close friend for her size. Or give her a gift voucher and take her shopping. That's a gift in itself.

What should a sister wear on Bhai Dooj?

Bhai Dooj is a daytime family festival. Keep it festive, but light.

·         Choose a suit, sharara or anarkali in a soft colour like pink, peach, pista or lavender.

·         Pin your dupatta for the aarti.

·         Wear light jewellery. Your brother's gift may be jewellery, so leave room for it.

·         Re-wear your Diwali outfit with a new dupatta and pearls instead of polki.

What are common Bhai Dooj mistakes?

8.      Checking the wrong date. India is on 11 November. Canada and the US are on 10 November.

9.      Missing the tilak window. In Delhi, it's about 1:09 PM to 3:19 PM. Plan lunch after.

10.  Forgetting the coconut and kalava. Make a checklist the night before.

11.    Wearing a loose net dupatta near the diya. Pin it or skip it during the aarti.

12.   Buying a gift in a rush on the day. Shops are busy and choices are thin.

What can a sister gift her brother on Bhai Dooj?

Gifts go both ways in many homes now. Here are ideas sisters love to give.

·         His favourite sweets, homemade if you can

·         A good shirt or kurta for the wedding season

·         A watch, wallet or belt

·         A book or a game he's been talking about

·         A handwritten note. It costs nothing and he'll keep it.

What should you cook for Bhai Dooj lunch?

Bhai Dooj ends with a meal. In many North Indian homes, it's a festive lunch with:

·         Puri and aloo sabzi

·         Chole or rajma

·         Kheer or halwa

·         His favourite mithai

Cook what he loves. That's the whole point of the day.

What should a brother wear on Bhai Dooj?

Brothers often forget this part. A little effort makes the photos lovely.

·         A simple kurta with pyjama or jeans

·         A Nehru jacket if the family is dressing up

·         Colours that sit well with his sister's outfit

·         A clean, ironed look. That's all it takes.

Your Bhai Dooj checklist

·         Check the date for your city

·         Note the tilak time

·         Thali with roli, rice, diya, sweets, coconut and kalava

·         Gift wrapped and ready

·         Lunch planned

·         Outfit pressed the night before

·         For brothers abroad: tilak kit sent a week early
