The Diwali 2026 Style Guide: Colours, Fabrics and Looks for the Season

QUICK ANSWER

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November, with the Delhi Lakshmi Puja muhurat from 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM. This season's festive mood favours handwork over heavy glitz, jewel tones and pastels, metallic bases like champagne and rose gold, and easy silhouettes like cape lehengas, pre-draped sarees and gharara sets.

Every year, in the second week of October, our store floor changes. The questions change too. In September, people ask about weddings. By mid-October, every second bride's mother, every college student and every grandmother asks me the same thing. "What's everyone wearing this Diwali?"

It's a fair question. Diwali is the one night of the year when almost everyone in India dresses up at the same time. You want to look festive. You want to look like this year, not five years ago. And you want something you'll wear again.

After twenty years of writing about Indian festive fashion, here's my honest read on Diwali 2026: the colours that are working, the fabrics worth buying, the shapes that feel new, and nine looks from our collection that bring it all together.

When is Diwali in 2026?

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November. It's the same date in India, Canada, the US and the UK.

What

Date and time (Delhi)

Amavasya begins

8 November, 11:28 AM

Pradosh kaal

8 November, 5:31 PM to 8:08 PM

Lakshmi Puja muhurat

8 November, 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM

Nishita kaal

8 November, 11:38 PM to 12:31 AM

Amavasya ends

9 November, 12:32 PM

Because the new moon runs into Monday afternoon, Govardhan Puja falls on Tuesday, 10 November and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday, 11 November in India this year.

What is the big Diwali fashion mood for 2026?

Last Diwali, many designers stepped away from loud, all-over glitter. The shift was towards handwork, craft and pieces you can wear many times. That mood has carried into this year.

Here's what I'm seeing on our floor and across the industry:

1.       Craft over bling. Fine handwork like gota, zardozi, dabka and cutdana in measured amounts, not sequins everywhere.

2.      Metallics as the base colour. Champagne, rose gold, antique gold and beige gold used for the whole outfit, not just the trim.

3.      Jewel tones, but softer. Emerald, teal, wine and sapphire, often in silk.

4.      Pastels for the puja. Powder pink, peach, mint and lilac, especially for daytime and family events.

5.      White and ivory at parties. Several Bollywood stars wore ivory and white to Diwali parties last year, and the look has stayed.

6.      Easy, modern shapes. Cape lehengas, pre-draped sarees, corset blouses and gharara sets.

7.      Re-wear. The best buys this year are pieces that work for Diwali and the wedding season.

What are the best colours for Diwali 2026?

Which fabrics are worth buying this Diwali?

·         Silk and dupion silk: rich, structured and safer near diyas than synthetics.

·         Tissue: a soft metallic shine that catches diya light.

·         Organza: light, crisp and lovely for capes and dupattas.

·         Sheer net: for heavy embroidery without heavy weight.

·         Velvet: for late-night parties as the evenings get cooler.

·         Georgette: the most comfortable choice for a long night.

How do you stay safe and comfortable on Diwali night?

Diwali is the night of a thousand flames. Dress for it.

·         Keep net dupattas away from diyas. Pin them, or take them off during the aarti.

·         Choose silk or cotton near open flames. Synthetic fabrics can melt.

·         Fitted sleeves are safer than wide bell sleeves near the puja thali.

·         Tie your hair for the aarti and fireworks.

·         Wear closed shoes if you'll be near fireworks.

·         Keep a shawl handy. November nights in Delhi get cool after 9 PM.

What jewellery goes with this year's Diwali looks?

·         With metallics: diamonds, polki or a single statement necklace. Keep it clean.

·         With jewel tones: gold, kundan and emerald or ruby stones.

·         With pastels: pearls and soft polki.

·         With ivory: gold, for warmth.

·         For your hands: stacked bangles for the puja, a cocktail ring for the card party.

How do NRI families dress for Diwali?

Diwali is a working day in Canada, the US and the UK, so most families celebrate in the evening and again on the nearest weekend. In 2026, Diwali falls on a Sunday, which makes things easier.

·         Plan for the cold. November in Ontario can be close to freezing. A velvet jacket, a long cape or a pashmina over your outfit keeps you warm between the car and the door.

·         Check local fireworks rules. In Brampton, personal fireworks aren't allowed except at city events. Sparklers are fine.

·         Order early. Our pieces are made to order and take about three to four weeks to arrive.

How can you get the most wear out of your Diwali outfit?

The wedding season starts soon after Diwali, with many shaadi dates in late November and early December. Every piece above can go to a wedding function.

·         A cape lehenga works for a sangeet or reception.

·         A garara set is perfect for a mehendi or day wedding.

·         A draped skirt saree works for a cocktail night.

·         A silk anarkali works for a family puja or roka.

Change the dupatta, the jewellery and the hair, and it's a new look.

When should you order your Diwali outfit?

Every Roop Vatika piece is made to order, and online orders take about three to four weeks to reach you. For Diwali on 8 November, order as early as possible. If you're short on time, visit our Delhi stores to try pieces in person and ask what can be ready for you.

Which Diwali look suits your body type?

Every body looks lovely in the right cut. Here's a quick guide.

·         Petite frame: a short shirt with a garara, or a lehenga with a high waist. Keep prints small.

·         Tall frame: a full flared lehenga or a long anarkali. You can carry volume well.

·         Curvy frame: an A-line anarkali or a straight suit. A belted drape also works beautifully.

·         Broad shoulders: a V-neck or a cape that falls from the shoulder.

·         If you want comfort first: a garara or sharara set. They look rich and feel easy.

Most of all, wear what makes you stand a little taller. That's the look people remember.

What makeup works best for Diwali night?

Diwali light is warm and golden. Use it.

·         Keep the base light. Diya light already makes skin glow.

·         Add warmth. A bronze or rose blush suits most Indian skin tones.

·         Pick one star. A bold eye or a bold lip. Not both.

·         Use waterproof kajal. Smoke from diyas and crackers can make your eyes water.

·         Set your makeup. You'll be near flames and warm rooms all night.

Your Diwali outfit checklist

Before Diwali night, run through this list.

·         Outfit tried on with the shoes you'll wear

·         Blouse and waist checked for comfort

·         Dupatta pins in your bag

·         Jewellery chosen, one star piece only

·         Shawl or jacket for the late evening

·         Hair plan that keeps hair away from diyas

·         Closed shoes for the fireworks

·         A small bag with lipstick, pins and blotting paper

Lay it all out the night before. Diwali day is always busier than you think.

Frequently asked questions about Diwali 2026 outfits

When is Diwali in 2026?

Diwali 2026 is on Sunday, 8 November. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat in Delhi is from 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM. Diwali falls on the same date in Canada, the US and the UK.

What colours are trending for Diwali 2026?

Metallic bases like champagne and rose gold, soft jewel tones like teal, emerald and wine, and pastels like powder pink and peach are popular for Diwali 2026. Ivory is also a favourite for Diwali parties.

What should I wear for Lakshmi Puja on Diwali?

For Lakshmi Puja, choose a silk anarkali, garara set, lehenga or saree in a warm colour like red, gold, yellow, pink or ivory. Pick natural fabrics near diyas and keep your dupatta pinned during the aarti.

Is a cape lehenga good for Diwali?

Yes. A cape lehenga is one of the most popular Diwali looks this season. The cape replaces the dupatta, so it stays in place, looks graceful in photos and is safer near diyas than a loose net dupatta.

Can I wear white on Diwali?

Yes, many people wear white or ivory to Diwali parties, and several celebrities wore it last year. Some families avoid plain white for the Lakshmi Puja itself, so add gold or colour through jewellery and the dupatta if needed.

How early should I order my Diwali outfit?

Order your Diwali outfit three to four weeks before 8 November if you're buying a made-to-order piece online. If you're short on time, visit a store to try pieces in person and ask what can be ready in time.
