Navratri Outfit Ideas: Nine Nights, Nine Looks

QUICK ANSWER

Roopvatika Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, 11 October and ends on Monday, 19 October. The colours for the nine days are orange, white, red, royal blue, yellow, green, grey, purple and peacock green. Plan one look per night in that colour, keep the fabric light for long evenings, and save your richest outfit for Ashtami.

I have been writing about Indian festive wear for close to twenty years. Every year, the same question lands in my inbox the week before Navratri. "What do I wear on each day?" It sounds simple. It isn't. Nine nights is a lot of dressing. You want each look to feel fresh. You want to honour the colour of the day. And you want to be comfortable enough to sit through a long puja or stay on your feet till midnight.

So this year, I've done the planning for you. Below you'll find the 2026 colour for each day, what that day stands for, and one outfit from the Roop Vatika collection that fits. I've also added the small things that make a big difference. Which fabric breathes. Which silhouette lets you sit on the floor. Which piece you can wear again at a wedding next month.

When is Navratri in 2026?

Sharad Navratri 2026 starts on Sunday, 11 October and ends on Monday, 19 October. Dussehra follows on Tuesday, 20 October.

One small detail is worth knowing this year. By the tithi, Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami both fall on Monday, 19 October in Delhi. So many families will do kanya pujan and the Ashtami puja on the same day. The colour chart below still follows the nine calendar days, which is how most people dress.

Where do the nine colours of Navratri come from?

Here's something many people don't know. The idea of one colour for each day is fairly new. It became popular in Mumbai through a newspaper campaign by Maharashtra Times. It spread across Maharashtra and Gujarat, and then the whole country picked it up.

That doesn't make it any less lovely. Today it's a shared ritual. Offices dress in the colour of the day. Friends plan their looks together on WhatsApp. For a festival about the many forms of one goddess, a colour for each form just feels right.

The colours move each year because they follow the weekday. Navratri 2026 starts on a Sunday, so day one is orange. If you saved a colour list from last year, please don't reuse it. It will be wrong.

What are the Navratri colours for 2026, day by day?

Now let's dress for each night.

Day 1: What should you wear in orange for Maa Shailputri?

Day one is for Maa Shailputri, the daughter of the mountains. Orange is the colour of fire, warmth and a fresh start. It's a bold way to open the festival.

Pure orange can feel loud on some skin tones. My tip is to go a shade deeper. Rust, burnt orange and terracotta carry the same energy but look richer. They also suit almost every Indian skin tone, from fair to deep.

FROM THE ROOP VATIKA COLLECTION

Adaa Rustique Anarkali Set

Rs. 28,500

A rust Chanderi anarkali worked with zari, resham, beads, marbles and sequins. Chanderi is light and airy, so it's easy to wear through the first-day ghatasthapana and a long evening after it.

https://roopvatikadesign.com/products/adaa-rustique-anarkali-set

Style it: Gold jhumkis, a small bindi and tan juttis. Keep the hair soft and open. Day one is about ease, not drama.

Day 2: How do you wear white for Maa Brahmacharini?

Day two honours Maa Brahmacharini, the goddess of devotion and calm. White stands for purity and peace.

White is the trickiest colour of the nine. Stark white can look plain at a festive puja. I always suggest ivory or cream instead. They glow under warm lights and photograph beautifully.

FROM THE ROOP VATIKA COLLECTION

Ananya Ivory Chanderi Silk Salwar Suit

Rs. 28,900

Woven Chanderi silk with booti, finished with gem, stone, cutdana and crystal hand-work. It's quiet and elegant, and it works for an office day as well as an evening aarti.

https://roopvatikadesign.com/products/ananya-ivory-chanderi-silk-salwar-suit

Style it: Pearls are the natural partner for ivory. Add a pastel potli and let the suit do the talking.

Day 3: What red outfit suits Maa Chandraghanta?

Day three belongs to Maa Chandraghanta, the warrior form of the goddess who wears a half moon on her forehead. Red is her colour. It means courage and strength.

Red is the one colour almost every Indian wardrobe already has. So this is a good night to try a new silhouette. A drape saree gives you the look of a saree with none of the fuss.

FROM THE ROOP VATIKA COLLECTION

Scarlet Pearl

Rs. 28,500

A red cocktail satin drape finished with pearl and zarkan work. It's ready to wear in minutes, and the pearls keep it festive without making it heavy.

https://roopvatikadesign.com/products/scarlet-pearl

Style it: A red lip, gold kadas and a sleek low bun. If you're wearing it to a family puja, a light dupatta over the shoulder adds a traditional touch.

Day 4: How do you style royal blue for Maa Kushmanda?

Day four is for Maa Kushmanda, who is said to have created the universe with her smile. Royal blue stands for depth, calm and power.

Blue is a strong colour for evening events. It looks rich at night and makes gold and silver jewellery shine. It's also the colour most people forget to plan for, so you'll stand out.

FROM THE ROOP VATIKA COLLECTION

Shahnoor Crop top & Skirt Set

Rs. 32,900

A royal blue georgette set with applique and cut dana work. Georgette moves well and doesn't cling, which matters on a night of dancing or standing at a pandal.

https://roopvatikadesign.com/products/shahnoor-crop-top-skirt-set

Style it: Silver or oxidised jewellery for a garba night. Gold and polki if you're heading to a family dinner.

Day 5: Which yellow look is right for Maa Skandamata?

Day five honours Maa Skandamata, the mother of Lord Kartikeya. Yellow is the colour of joy, light and learning.

Yellow is my favourite colour of the nine. It's cheerful, it suits almost everyone, and it looks lovely in daylight photos. An anarkali in yellow feels festive the moment you put it on.

FROM THE ROOP VATIKA COLLECTION

Suhasini Yellow Anarkali

Rs. 63,500

A georgette anarkali with dori, pearl and mirror work. The flare swirls when you move, and the mirror work catches every diya and fairy light around you.

https://roopvatikadesign.com/products/suhasini-yellow-anarkali-ss48

Style it: Kundan earrings, a pop of pink on the lips and embroidered mojaris. This is the look I'd pick for a Navratri party at a friend's home.

Day 6: What should you wear in green for Maa Katyayani?

Day six is for Maa Katyayani, the fierce form who defeated Mahishasura. Green stands for growth, new beginnings and peace.

Deep greens look far more expensive than bright ones. Think bottle green, emerald and forest. They carry well into winter weddings too, so a green piece is a smart buy.

FROM THE ROOP VATIKA COLLECTION

Jade Illusion Couture

Rs. 28,500

A bottle green raw silk ensemble with sequins, kundan, dapka and cutdana. Raw silk has a gentle sheen and holds its shape, so the outfit looks crisp from the first aarti to the last photo.

https://roopvatikadesign.com/products/jade-illusion-couture

Style it: Gold jewellery with green stones, or simple pearls. Keep the bag small and gold.

Day 7: How can grey look festive for Maa Kalaratri?

Day seven honours Maa Kalaratri, the fiercest form of Durga, who destroys darkness and fear. Grey stands for strength and balance.

A lot of people worry that grey looks dull at a festival. It doesn't have to. The trick is shine. Choose grey with mirror work, sequins or silver thread, and it turns into a very modern festive colour.

FROM THE ROOP VATIKA COLLECTION

Steel Grey Georgette Mirror Work Crop Top And Sharara

Rs. 23,900

A steel grey georgette crop top and sharara covered in mirror work. It's light, easy to move in, and made for a garba or dandiya night.

https://roopvatikadesign.com/products/steel-grey-georgette-mirror-work-crop-top-and-sharara-d221

Style it: Chunky oxidised silver, a bright potli in pink or orange, and flat juttis for dancing.

Day 8: What purple outfit suits Maa Mahagauri?

Day eight is for Maa Mahagauri, the goddess of purity and grace. Purple stands for dignity and ambition.

In many homes, the eighth day is the biggest day of Navratri. So this is the night for your richest look. Purple does that job well. It feels royal without trying too hard.

FROM THE ROOP VATIKA COLLECTION

Meher-e-Firoza Patra Ensemble

Rs. 45,900

A purple georgette ensemble with sequins, crystal, cut dana and tiki work. It has the richness you want for Ashtami, but georgette keeps it light enough for a long evening.

https://roopvatikadesign.com/products/meher-e-firoza-patra-ensemble

Style it: Gold and polki jewellery, a statement maang tikka and a soft wave in the hair.

Day 9: How do you wear peacock green for Maa Siddhidatri?

Day nine honours Maa Siddhidatri, who blesses her devotees with wisdom and success. Peacock green is the last colour of the festival. It's a mix of blue and green, bright and full of life.

Peacock is one of the most striking colours in Indian fashion. It suits warm and cool skin tones alike, and it looks great in photos. It's a fine way to close nine nights.

FROM THE ROOP VATIKA COLLECTION

Hrisha Peacock Anarkali

Rs. 50,900

A peacock semi silk anarkali with dori, sequins and Swarovski work. The colour is rich, the flare is generous, and it's festive enough for the final night's celebrations.

https://roopvatikadesign.com/products/hrisha-peacock-anarkali-sc17

Style it: Gold jhumkas, green or ruby stones, and a bright pink potli for contrast.

How do you plan nine Navratri looks without buying nine new outfits?

I'll be honest. Very few of us buy nine new outfits for Navratri. You don't need to. Here's how I plan the nine nights.

1.       Pick three hero pieces. Choose three outfits you love. Wear them on the three nights that matter most to you. For many people that's day one, Ashtami and the last night.

2.      Fill the rest from your wardrobe. Pull out a white kurta, a red saree, a yellow suit. Most of us have more of the nine colours than we think.

3.      Use dupattas to change the colour. A plain ivory suit with a green dupatta works for day six. The same suit with a purple dupatta works for day eight.

4.      Change the jewellery, not the outfit. Oxidised silver for garba nights, gold for pujas. One outfit can look very different with each.

5.      Buy pieces that will work again. Every look above can go to a wedding, a sangeet or a Diwali party later. That's the best way to shop for a festival.

What fabrics are best for Navratri?

Navratri falls in mid-October. In Delhi, days are still warm and nights start to cool. You may be sitting on the floor for a puja, standing in a crowd at a pandal, or dancing for hours. The fabric matters as much as the colour.

·         Chanderi is light and soft. It's ideal for daytime pujas and long evenings.

·         Georgette flows and doesn't crease easily. It's great for garba and dandiya.

·         Raw silk holds its shape and has a soft sheen. It looks polished at dinners and family events.

·         Semi silk gives you a rich festive finish without the weight of heavy brocade.

Skip very heavy velvets and stiff layers this early in the season. Save those for December weddings.

How should you dress for a Navratri puja at home?

If your Navratri is more about fasting and puja at home, comfort wins. You'll be sitting on the floor, moving around the kitchen, and standing near diyas and a havan.

A few simple rules help:

·         Choose suits, shararas and palazzo sets that let you sit cross-legged.

·         Keep sleeves close to the arm near an open flame.

·         Pin your dupatta well, or drape it over one shoulder.

·         Wear light jewellery. You'll be touching your ears and hair a lot during the aarti.

What should you wear for kanya pujan?

Kanya pujan is one of the sweetest moments of Navratri. You wash the feet of young girls, serve them halwa, puri and chana, and seek their blessings. You'll be bending, serving and sitting a lot.

I suggest a suit or an anarkali with a dupatta you can tuck away. A light Chanderi piece is perfect. This year, many Delhi families will do kanya pujan on Monday, 19 October, when Ashtami and Navami fall together. Plan your peacock green or purple look for that day.

Frequently asked questions about Navratri outfits

What are the 9 colours of Navratri 2026?

The nine colours for Navratri 2026 are orange (11 October), white (12 October), red (13 October), royal blue (14 October), yellow (15 October), green (16 October), grey (17 October), purple (18 October) and peacock green (19 October).

Why do the Navratri colours change every year?

The colours are linked to the day of the week on which Navratri starts. Navratri 2026 starts on a Sunday, so day one is orange. Because the start day changes each year, the order of colours changes too.

Is it compulsory to wear the Navratri colour of the day?

No. The colour of the day is a modern custom, not a religious rule. It became popular through a Mumbai newspaper campaign. Wear it if you enjoy it. Your devotion matters far more than your outfit.

What colour should I avoid during Navratri?

Many families avoid black during Navratri pujas because it's seen as less auspicious. This is a custom, not a rule, and it varies from home to home. If you're unsure, pick one of the nine colours.

What is the best outfit for Navratri for women?

Anarkalis, sharara sets, lehengas with a light skirt and drape sarees all work well. For pujas, choose a suit or anarkali you can sit in. For garba or dandiya, choose a flared lehenga or sharara in a light fabric like georgette or Chanderi.

Can I wear my Navratri outfit to a wedding later?

Yes. Every look in this guide can be restyled for a sangeet, mehendi or wedding guest look in November and December. Change the jewellery and dupatta, and it will feel like a new outfit.
