Karwa Chauth Outfit Ideas for Your First Year as a Bride

QUICK ANSWER

Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October. For your first Karwa Chauth, wear red, maroon, pink or gold. Many new brides re-wear their bridal lehenga or choose a new festive lehenga, saree or sharara. Keep something light for sargi and the katha, and save your fullest look for moonrise.

Your first Karwa Chauth is a big day. It isn't only a fast. It's often the first festival you celebrate as part of your new family. Your mother-in-law will send your first sargi. The women of the family will gather for the katha. And everyone will want a photo when you see the moon.

I've written about Karwa Chauth for nearly twenty years. I've talked to hundreds of new brides about what they wore and what they wished they'd worn. The same lesson comes up every time. Plan your look around the whole day, not just the moment the moon comes out.

This guide walks you through the day, the colours, the choice between your wedding lehenga and something new, and the looks that brides love most.

When is Karwa Chauth in 2026?

Karwa Chauth 2026 is on Thursday, 29 October. In Delhi, the moon is expected to rise at around 8:17 PM. Moonrise times change from city to city, so check your local panchang on the day.

The fast runs from sunrise to moonrise. Most brides eat sargi before dawn, fast through the day, join the katha in the late afternoon, and break the fast after seeing the moon.

What happens on a bride's first Karwa Chauth?

Knowing the rituals helps you plan what to wear for each part of the day.

Sargi (before sunrise): Your mother-in-law sends or gives you sargi. It's a thali of food, sweets, dry fruits and fruit to eat before the fast begins. In Punjabi homes, it often includes fenia. For a first Karwa Chauth, sargi usually also holds gifts, such as clothes, bangles, sindoor and makeup.

The day: You fast without food and, in many families, without water. Many women apply mehendi the night before or on the day.

Katha (late afternoon): The women of the family and neighbourhood sit in a circle. An elder woman or a priest tells the Karwa Chauth story. You pass your thalis around the circle while songs are sung.

Baya: You offer a gift thali, called baya, to your mother-in-law. It often has sweets, mathri, clothes and money.

Moonrise: You look at the moon through a sieve, called a chhalni, and then at your husband's face. He gives you water and a sweet to break your fast.

What colour should you wear on your first Karwa Chauth?

Red is the classic choice. It's the colour of marriage, love and good fortune. But it isn't the only one. Here are the colours that feel right for the day.

Colour

What it means

Why brides love it

Red

Love, marriage, good luck

Timeless and bridal

Maroon

Richer and more grown-up than red

Pink

Gold

Orange

Energy and warmth

A bright change from red

Yellow

Happiness

Lovely for the daytime katha

Many families avoid black and white on Karwa Chauth. Black is seen as less auspicious, and white is linked with mourning in many North Indian homes. This is a custom, not a rule, but on your first Karwa Chauth it's kind to follow your in-laws' lead.

Should you re-wear your bridal lehenga for Karwa Chauth?

This is the most common question new brides ask me. Here's my honest answer. Yes, if you want to. Many new brides wear their wedding lehenga on their first Karwa Chauth. It's a sweet tradition, and your lehenga deserves another day out.

But think about three things first.

1.       Weight: A bridal lehenga can weigh several kilos. You'll be fasting all day. If your lehenga is very heavy, save it for the moonrise moment only.

2.      Fit: Try it on at least two weeks before. Leave time for small changes.

3.      Look: Wearing your lehenga the exact same way can feel like a wedding re-run. Change the dupatta, the jewellery or the hair to give it a fresh mood.

If your bridal lehenga was pastel or ivory, or you simply want something new, a fresh red or pink outfit is a lovely way to mark the day.

What should you wear for sargi, katha and moonrise?

The smartest brides I know plan two looks, or one look styled two ways.

For sargi, before sunrise

You'll be half asleep and eating in the kitchen or your room. Wear a soft cotton or silk suit, or even your nightwear with a nice dupatta if your family is relaxed. Some brides wear the new outfit from their sargi, which is a lovely touch for your mother-in-law.

For the katha, late afternoon

You'll sit on the floor with the other women for about an hour. Choose something you can sit cross-legged in. A suit, sharara or saree works best. If you're wearing a lehenga, pick one with a light skirt. Keep the dupatta on your head if that's the family custom.

For moonrise, in the evening

This is the hero moment. Put on your full look, your heavier jewellery, and fresh lipstick. You'll be on the terrace, so a shawl or a jacket over your outfit is wise if it's cool.

Lehenga, saree or sharara: which is best for Karwa Chauth?

Each one has its own charm. The right choice depends on your family, your comfort and how long you'll be on your feet.

Outfit

Best for

Keep in mind

Lehenga

The full bridal feeling and big family photos

Can be heavy on a fasting day

Saree

A graceful, traditional look

Pleats need care when sitting for the katha

Drape saree

The saree look in minutes

Pick one with a soft, flexible base

Sharara suit

Comfort with a festive finish

Choose rich fabric so it doesn't look too casual

Anarkali

Easy sitting and a pretty flare

Add heavier jewellery for the evening

If you're still unsure, think about your mother-in-law's style. In many homes, the first Karwa Chauth is as much her day as yours. A traditional choice makes her proud. You can bring in your own taste through the colour, the drape or the jewellery.

Should you coordinate your look with your husband?

It's a sweet idea, and it makes the moonrise photos lovely. You don't need to match. Just connect.

·         If you're in red, he can wear an ivory or gold kurta with a red stole.

·         If you're in pink, a cream kurta with a pink pocket square or a Nehru jacket works.

·         If you're in maroon, a deep beige or bottle green kurta looks rich beside you.

Tell him what you're wearing a few days before. Many husbands are happy to plan once they know the colour.

Solah shringar means the sixteen adornments of a married woman. The list changes from region to region. It often includes sindoor, bindi, kajal, mehendi, bangles, mangalsutra, nose ring, earrings, maang tikka, anklets, toe rings, a hair ornament, perfume and bridal clothes.

You don't need to follow a strict list. On your first Karwa Chauth, the most loved pieces are:

·         Mehendi on the hands, often with your husband's name hidden in it

·         Sindoor and a red bindi

·         Chooda or red and gold bangles

·         Mangalsutra

·         A maang tikka or a small matha patti for the evening

·         Payal, so the family hears you coming

How do you make your bridal lehenga look new again?

If you're re-wearing your wedding lehenga, a few changes make it feel like a new look.

·         Change the dupatta. Swap your heavy bridal dupatta for a lighter net or organza one in a contrast colour.

·         Drape it differently. Try a one-shoulder drape or a cape-style drape instead of the head drape you wore at your wedding.

·         Lighten the jewellery. Replace the full bridal set with a single statement necklace or big earrings.

·         Change the hair. If you wore a bun at your wedding, try soft waves or a braid with flowers.

·         Add a jacket. A short embroidered jacket over the blouse gives the lehenga a whole new mood.

What makeup and hair work best for Karwa Chauth?

You'll be fasting, so keep your routine simple and long-lasting.

·         Prep well. Drink plenty of water at sargi and use a good moisturiser. Fasting can dry out your skin.

·         Use a light base. Heavy foundation can look cakey by evening. A tinted base and concealer are enough.

·         Pick a red or berry lip. It's the classic Karwa Chauth look.

·         Wear waterproof kajal. Emotional moments happen.

·         Keep hair off your face. A soft bun or braid stays neat through the katha and moonrise.

What should you wear for Karwa Chauth if you live abroad?

Many new brides celebrate their first Karwa Chauth far from home, in Canada, the US, the UK or the Gulf. The rituals stay the same. Only the moonrise time changes, so check a local panchang for your city.

Order your outfit at least three to four weeks early to leave time for shipping and fittings. If you'd like help, our stylists do video consultations on WhatsApp for brides anywhere in the world.
